Syracuse alumni and basketball fans are pulling together to help out one of its own, Dwayne "Pearl" Washington, with a GoFundMe campaign to help the beloved former star with rising medical costs from a brain tumor he's been dealing with since 1995.
Brandon Steiner, a Syracuse grad and CEO of Steiner Sports Marketing, started the page, which already has plenty of donations from other Syracuse grads wanting to help Pearl Washington improve his conditions.
"Pearl has been sticking in for a while, but unfortuantely there is a lot he is dealing with," Steiner wrote. "He struggles to walk and needs assistance/supervision. I'm trying to get this next phase more comfortable for him."
Mark Finney, a friend of Washington's, told Syracuse.com that he would need 24-hour supervision, and the family has to pay for the assistance out of pocket.
The Brooklyn native was the Big East Freshman of the Year in 1984 and a three-time All-Big East selection for the Orange before playing for the Heat and the Nets in the NBA.
